The third biomass boiler room on the Whelen campus is their latest effort to fully eliminate the use of heating oil in their 330,000 square feet of production, warehouse and office facilities located in Charlestown, NH.
Three Viessmann dry wood chip boilers have a total maximum output of over 5 million BTU per hour. The plan is to have them take most of the winter heating load.
Now that the third plant is running, Whelen is offsetting an average of 190,000 gallons of heating oil each year with precision dry wood chips.
Combining the low cost of PDCs with the expected generation of 5500 NH T-RECs per year their net cost of heating fuel will be like buying oil for less than 80 cents a gallon!
